Uetliberg: Zurich’s own mountain

The Uetliberg is Zurich’s "Hausberg", its home mountain. From the summit, at about 870 m, there is a panoramic view of the city, Lake Zurich and the Alps – and it is particularly popular in November, when the summit is often above the fog that covers the city.

What to do on the Uetliberg

  • Lookout tower: 178 steps take you to a 360-degree view from 70 m up. Next to it stands the 186 m Uetliberg TV tower and the 4-star Hotel Uto Kulm.
  • Planet Trail: the Planet Trail from Uetliberg to Felsenegg was designed by Arnold von Rotz and opened in 1979. Built at a scale of 1:1 billion, each metre represents 1 million km; the 7.17 km hike (about 2 hours) leads from the sun past the eight planets to the dwarf planet Pluto. It is an easy family walk and also suitable for strollers.
  • Sledging: in winter a 3.1 km toboggan run with a 330 m descent starts a few steps from the Uetliberg train terminus and runs through the forest down to the Triemli district. Snow is not guaranteed; families with small children are advised to use the slope at Ringlikon station instead.
  • Mountain biking: two trails, the Triemli Bike Trail (also called Antenna Trail) and the Höckler Bike Trail.
  • Paragliding: possible in low to moderate breeze; the launch area is very small and surrounded by trees.

Good to know

  • The Uetliberg is part of the Albis chain. Its summit, Uto Kulm, lies in the municipality of Stallikon.
  • Sources give the height as 869 to 871 m; we use "about 870 m".
  • On foggy days in the colder months, go up: the summit often sits above the fog with a clear view of the Alps.
  • After the Planet Trail, the cable car takes you from Felsenegg down to Adliswil, and the S4 back to Zurich.
  • Zürich Tourism notes that Zürich Card holders travel free on the Uetliberg line (offers can change).

Getting there from Zürich HB

  • Normally: the S10 (SZU Uetliberg line) runs from the underground SZU station at Zürich HB to Uetliberg station in about 20 minutes.
  • 2026: the SZU station at Zürich HB is closed from 29 April to 12 December 2026; the S10 only runs as far as Selnau. Check the SBB timetable for your date.
  • From Uetliberg station it is a 7-minute walk through the forest to the summit.
  • On foot: about 45 minutes from Uitikon-Waldegg or Albisgüetli, about 1 hour from Triemli.
  • By car you cannot drive to the summit; Hotel Uto Kulm recommends the free Feldermoos car park in Uitikon-Waldegg and the S10 from Uitikon-Waldegg station.
